Explore South Africa’s Premier Big 5 Malaria-Free Game Reserve

Set within one of South Africa’s most ecologically rich and well-managed wilderness areas, Madikwe Game Reserve offers exceptional game viewing across a landscape teeming with biodiversity. This expansive, malaria-free reserve is home to the Big Five including black and white rhino as well as cheetah, wild dog and over 350 bird species. With no day visitors allowed and strict conservation practices in place, Madikwe delivers an uncrowded, immersive safari experience that showcases the very best of South Africa’s natural heritage.

Tucked along South Africa’s border with Botswana, the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the country’s best-kept safari secrets. Just a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria, the reserve spans over 75,000 hectares of pristine wilderness – a landscape of open grasslands, bushveld plains, and striking rocky outcrops.

Once farmland, Madikwe was transformed in 1991 through Operation Phoenix, one of the largest wildlife relocation projects in the world. More than 8,000 animals were reintroduced here, breathing new life into the land and restoring its natural balance.

Rich in heritage, the reserve takes its name from the nearby Marico River. The surrounding region inspired many of Herman Charles Bosman’s beloved stories, capturing the soul and spirit of this corner of Africa that bears “the authentic stamp of South Africa.”

Wildlife

The Madikwe Game Reserve offers some of the most rewarding wildlife viewing in South Africa. As a Big 5 reserve, it’s home to lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo – along with a dazzling variety of other species. But what sets Madikwe apart is its abundance of cheetah and African Wild Dog, earning it Super 7 status. From numerous types of antelope to over 350 bird species, life here is abundant and diverse.

Conservation

Madikwe is a living example of how people and wildlife can thrive together. The reserve was founded on a community-based conservation model, with several lodges owned and operated by local residents. These partnerships create employment, support small businesses, and ensure that tourism directly benefits surrounding communities. The reserve is home to the endangered African Wild Dog, cheetah and black and white rhino, and we work closely with Madikwe Game Reserve efforts to protect these species. Conservation is an active and important part of life here.
